meditation or medication?

Meditation is a funny thing. It has the ability to bring us great wisdom, peace, and clarity in our lives. If we do it with an authentic and earnest spirit, it can answer deep questions within that we did not know we even had.

Yet like anything, meditation can be used ineffectively. Meditation can act in a way like medication. If there are things that we do not want to deal with yet, we can meditate our problems away just as we can medicate our problems away. It’s all in the attitude and spirit that inspires us to meditate. If we sit to meditate in order to feel better, perhaps we do so in the same spirit as medicating ourselves in order to feel better. However, if we are willing to meditate in order to take the scalpel of truth and slice into the lies within our crazy thought scattered minds to see what’s really there, we can utilize meditation as a way to cleanse ourselves and free the confused thoughts that bring so much suffering. Everything has 2 sides – anything can be used for good or for evil. By evil, I mean taking action that goes against yourself. Prayer, meditation, medication, even LOVE can be used to harm if it is from a place of egoic striving.
