Self Improvement/Self Growth

Posted on 9th September 2009 in Life

We spend so many years trying to become “better” versions of ourselves, hoping that this will eventually make us happy. Yet that better version of us never fully comes and the happiness promised never really arrives. All we will have done is improved pretending to be who we are not = the source of so much unhappiness. Look deeply at what you once disliked in yourself & allow it to arise (yikes!)

gaining the world and losing your soul

Posted on 8th September 2009 in Life

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” ~Jesus

Some thoughts on this message as I am coming to understand it more.

Confusion happens when we forget who we are underneath our personalities. Confusion leads to suffering. Who were we before we developed our personality, our idiosyncrasies, our opinions, beliefs? We forget who we are, then we forget that we forgot. Then we begin to only see the trees, no longer the forest.

Having forgotten our essence, we feel empty and lost. To fill this emptiness, we see others filling up themselves with nouns – people, places, and things. Sounds like a good idea! Maybe this or that, he or she, here or there will plug this empty hole within.

We hope to gain the world, because we have forgotten about the world from which we came, the world of soul. “Soul” is just a word now, just a concept, no longer a reality. We no longer understand, sense, or feel it. The only thing we feel is the world, the outside world of people, places, and things.

Who can blame us for trying to fill this hole we feel with all we think is real – with the world?! Yet all the stuff in the world will never fill this hole – impossible. And so at the end, we may or may not have gained the world, but in so trying, we have lost our connection with the divine, with Soul, with our true essence.

This can only be remembered, never acquired.
