Loneliness (Osho)

Posted on 26th September 2010 in Life

“The darkness of loneliness cannot be fought directly. It is something essential for everyone to understand, that there are a few fundamental things which cannot be changed. This is one of the fundamentals: you cannot fight with darkness directly, with loneliness directly, with the fear of isolation directly. The reason is that all these things do not exist; they are simply absences of something, just as darkness is the absence of light.

Now what do you do when you want the room not to be dark? You don’t do anything directly with darkness — or do you? You cannot push it out. There is no possible way to make any arrangement so that the darkness disappears. You have to do something with the light. Now that changes the whole situation; and that’s what I call one of the essentials, fundamentals. You don’t even touch the darkness; you don’t think about it. There is no point; it does not exist, it is simply an absence.

So just bring in light and you will not find darkness at all, because it was the absence of light, simply the absence of light — not something material, with its own being, not something that exists. But simply because light was not there, you got a false feeling of the existence of darkness.

Free & Easy

Lama Gendun Rimpoche

Happiness cannot be found

through great effort and willpower,

but is already present, in open relaxation and letting go.

^^^^^^^^^^

Don’t strain yourself,

there is nothing to do or undo.

Whatever momentarily arises in the body-mind

has no real importance at all,

has little reality whatsoever.

Why identify with, and become attached to it,

passing judgment upon it and ourselves?

^^^^^^^^^

Far better to simply

let the entire game happen on its own,

springing up and falling back like waves–

without changing or manipulating anything–

and notice how every thing vanishes and

reappears, magically, again and again,

time without end.

^^^^^^^^^^

Only our searching for happiness

prevents us from seeing it.

It’s like a vivid rainbow which you pursue without ever catching,

or a dog chasing its own tail.

^^^^^^^^^^

Although peace and happiness do not exist

as an actual thing or place,

it is always available

and accompanies you every instant.

^^^^^^^^^

Don’t believe in the reality

of good and bad experiences;

they are like today’s ephemeral weather,

like rainbows in the sky.

^^^^^^^^^^

Wanting to grasp the ungraspable,

you exhaust yourself in vain.

As soon as you open and relax this tight fist of grasping,

infinite space is there–open, inviting and comfortable.

^^^^^^^^^^

Make use of this spaciousness, this freedom and natural ease.

Don’t search any further.

Don’t go into the tangled jungle

looking for the great awakened elephant,

who is already resting quietly at home

in front of your own hearth.

^^^^^^^^^

Nothing to do or undo,

nothing to force,

nothing to want,

and nothing missing–

The lie of your personality

Posted on 13th September 2010 in Life

“The lie cannot become the truth, the personality cannot become your soul. There is no way to make the nonessential the essential. The nonessential remains nonessential and the essential remains essential, they are not convertible. And striving towards truth is nothing but creating more confusion. The truth has not to be achieved. It cannot be achieved, it is already the case. Only the lie has to be dropped. All aims and ends and ideals and goals and ideologies, religions and systems of improvement and betterment, are lies. Beware of them. Recognize the fact that, as you are, you are a lie. Manipulated, cultivated by others. Striving after truth is a distraction and a postponement. It is the lie’s way to hide. See the lie, look deep into the lie of your personality.”

Osho: This Very Body The Buddha Chapter 6

It’s so easy to get caught in believing that our personalities are actually us. It’s a great belief when there are aspects of our personalities that we like and are proud of – this is joyful. Yet when there are aspects of our personalities that we don’t like and are ashamed of, this creates much pain. Why not begin questioning whether or not your personality is really you or not? How much of it did you choose while growing up versus it simply evolving on its own based upon certain conditions and factors in your life. How much of a choice do you have in the way the personality is expressed. When you try to control the way your personality is projected, how successful are you at that and for how long? For me, I can keep this up for a while, but the personality seems to reappear again the way it always did after some time. If a personality changes over time, it usually is not because of our doing but just the way it goes naturally.

More importantly, are you aware of the different aspects of your personality? Can you notice it become loud and boisterous in certain conversations with people? Can you notice when it’s showing off? When it’s ashamed and shy? If you can notice these things either in the moment or afterwards, then who are you? To notice your personality might suggest that in that moment you are not your personality – you are something behind that is able to watch it.
